The greatest of all time

By virtually every objective measure the sport keeps, Novak Đoković is the most accomplished tennis player in history. Across more than two decades on tour he has rewritten the record books for Grand Slam titles, weeks at world No. 1, Masters 1000 trophies, year-end championships and head-to-head dominance against his era's greatest rivals. No other player, male or female, has won every major, every Masters 1000, the ATP Finals and Olympic singles gold. Đoković alone has done it.

What separates him is not a single shot or surface but completeness: a returner without peer, a defender who turns defence into offence, and a champion who has beaten Federer, Nadal, Murray, Wawrinka, Medvedev, Alcaraz and Sinner in major finals. He is the only man to hold all four Slams at once in the modern era, the only man to win each Slam at least three times, and the player who has spent more time at the top of the rankings than any human being to have picked up a racket.

Career honours and records

  • 24 Grand Slam singles titles - the most in men's tennis history.
  • 10 Australian Open titles - outright record at any single major.
  • 7 Wimbledon, 4 US Open and 3 Roland-Garros titles - three or more at every Slam, a feat no one else has matched.
  • Career Grand Slam, three times over - the only male player ever to win each major at least three times.
  • Career Golden Slam - completed with Olympic singles gold at Paris 2024, joining tennis's most exclusive club.
  • 428 weeks at world No. 1 - the all-time record for any player, men or women.
  • 8 year-end No. 1 finishes - more than any other player in the Open Era.
  • 40 ATP Masters 1000 titles - the outright record, and a complete sweep of all nine Masters events (the “Career Golden Masters”), the only man to do so.
  • 7 ATP Finals titles - tied for the most ever.
  • 99+ ATP singles titles - a tally surpassed only by Connors and Federer.
  • Davis Cup champion (2010) - the cornerstone of Serbia's first and only title.
  • Winning record against every other member of the Big Three - leading both Federer and Nadal in their head-to-heads.

From the boy who learned the game in a Belgrade pool during NATO air raids to the man who lifts trophies on every continent, his story is the rare case where the statistics and the eye agree. By the numbers, by the silverware and by the longevity, Novak Đoković is the greatest tennis player who has ever lived.

And while parts of the Western press have never quite afforded him the warmth they reserved for his great rivals, for the public who pack arenas from Belgrade to Melbourne, and above all for the fans who have stood by him through every storm, Đoković has long since settled the argument, and will always remain the one who truly matters.
